Aubridge Ready 4 Action (3/12/2008 - 5/15/2018)

Mr. Zachary
Mr. Zachary

Smart. Fun. A consummate retriever.

Easy to train, a pleasure to be around, and always the Golden Temperament for which the breed is so famous.

I've taken thousands of pictures of him, but the one above, taken just last month, seemed to sum him up the best.

I have no idea how many tricks he knew - a lot!

He could empty the dryer into a basket, pull a laundry basket, throw paper into a garbage can, "tap" the Easy Button, close cupboard doors, bring toys, "Find it!", spin, high-five (his favorite), bow, roll over, wave, shake (either paw), plus all the usuals... and that's just off the top of my head.

Photoshoots were one of the highlights of the day. New props, new poses, and most of... Cookies!

Cookies, Bitey-Face, walks... the usual doggie things... were high on list of things to do, and were all tackled with much enthusiasm.

We chose Zachary because we felt he would have enough energy to keep up with Beau yet still get along.

We chose well.

Dog Blog Post #2487

We lost Zachary on Tuesday. Hemangeosarcoma. We had no idea.

With luck we will get a puppy for Henry this summer - something we had already been planning for some time. Of course, there are no guarantees.

We can only cross our fingers and hope our breeder's girls have a boy puppy just right for us.

A vet I never met sent the following to me after we lost Beau:

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we would still live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan."

-- Irvin Townsend

I loved it so much I added it the bottom of this blog at the time.

I think it's good to remind ourselves at times like this that the alternative to the pain of losing them is never having had the joying of knowing them at all.

I'm so sorry. I've watched your pictures for years of the boys. Your goldens always looked so happy together. Run fee over the bridge sweet boy.

Good luck on your journey to find a friend for Henry. It is a challenge we faced with Bailey and we are just starting the exploration as Katy turns 10 because having had Katy as an only for a few short months I know Annie will not do well.

Peace be with you and your family at this heart breaking time.

I am so sorry for your sudden loss of Zachary. Your love and devotion to each other was obvious in your photos.

A devasting loss for you, but your words are so true, that the alternative to the pain of loss is never having the joy of knowing them at all. None of us who have given our hearts to a dog would choose that path, however much it hurts when we say goodbye.

Run free sweet Zachary.
