Dog Blog Post #588: Wow - today's Daily Dog Challenge of...

96. Time Passes - Use your dog to take a photo that illustrates the passing of time today.

... was a toughie. The consolation that I needed something similar for Scavenge Challenge this month...

Scavenge Challenge February 2012 - "5. Demonstrate the passage of time without using a timepiece of any sort."

... made it a little better, but Our Daily Challenge's assignment of...

"Dedication"

... made it a lot worse. My initial thought was to find something that one of the boys had been chewing on, which would show their dedication to the task and the imply that some amount of time had gone into it.

It was a good idea, and the fact that hubby suggested something similar when asked bolstered its potential. Alas, the fact I couldn't find anything pretty much shot it out of the water.

Henry: "This is boring. Who cares about all this past stuff, anyway."

Plan B

A set shoot, using a tartan blanket (Golden Retrievers are of Scottish descent) as the backdrop (later revised to being on the floor) and displaying whatever I could dig up. This resulted in the description I put on flickr:

The boys were checking out their Genealogy today. In addition to their AKC Pedigrees, we have…

* A picture of Henry at about 6 weeks old

* A B&W photo of Culham Copper, who was born in 1908 and is found in most golden pedigrees, including the boys - 23 generations for Zachary and 24 for Henry (yes, I counted!)

* A painting of St. Huberts Peter presented to King George V in 1913 (far left) - an offshoot of goldens that I believe died out.

* A picture of "BIS BISS Am/Can CH Rush Hill's Haagen-Dazs CDX JH AX OAJ WCX VCX OS SDHF; Can. CD, WC", found in recent pedigrees of many American goldens, including my boys (about 5 generations back)

Our Daily Challenge - Feb. 4, 2012 - "Dedication"

The dedication of so many breeders, over so many years, has resulted in a truly wonderful breed with a temperament as golden as their coats. As the standard states:

"Temperament
Friendly, reliable, and trustworthy. Quarrelsomeness or hostility towards other dogs or people in normal situations, or an unwarranted show of timidity or nervousness, is not in keeping with Golden Retriever character."

Genealogy
Zachary: "Says here, Henry, that both your parents, all grandparents, and most your great-grandparents are AKC Champions."

Genealogy
Zachary: "Golden Retrievers were developed in Scotland by Sir Dudley Margoribanks, Lord Tweedmouth, beginning around 1865..."

Genealogy
Zachary: "... using a yellow retriever named Nous, the Tweed Water Spaniel, an Irish Setter, St. John's Water Dog of Newfoundland, and... and... a Bloodhound!"

I really like your approach to this one. Also, I'm amazed how you get the boys looking in the direction you wish. I'm usually just trying to get one at a time to do that. I can't imagine getting two of the, to do it at the same time!

I love this post for so many reasons! The pictures are fantastic, and I laughed out loud when I read Henry's words combined with his expression in the last one. I love the mix or history you put into it, too, not just the boys' personal history, but the history of the breed, as well!
