Henry, watching me

Dog Blog Post #2280

Is it just me, or did the Miami Dolphins look like giant pumpkins in their Color Rush uniforms?

Anyway, here's Henry watching the game, as seen by my iPhone through a plastic needlepoint canvas, which has a square "frame" of stitches around empty squares - my current Football Season project.

His fur looks a bit funny as he'd just finished giving himself a bath.

Or at least the parts he cared most about.

He is a dog after all, and not a cat.

Latest Project
Canvas, no dogs in sight.

The empty square surrounded by golden stitches that I was (mostly) taking pictures through.

That's my finger at the bottom, for size reference - ten squares = 1 inch.

Part of Me might be in the pictures, but for the boys, it's all about the Lacrosse Ball.

Well, at least for Zachary it is.

Henry just uses it to get Zachary to play with him.

Scraps

Scraps
Henry: "What box?"

Scraps
Zachary: "Ewwww"

Dog Blog Post #2277

In our house, many items come with a free dog toy on the OUTSIDE.

Today, we have the Crumpled Scraps that once were a Dog Cookie box.

We toss the empty paper cartons and boxes into the boys' toy basket.

They are then free to pull them out when the mood strikes and rip them to shreds.

Bits of shredded box are often used for rousing games of keep-away, a rather silly game given that equal-sized scraps of box often litter the ground all around them.

I keep a small under-bush plastic rake in the closet to quickly gather up the evidence for disposal.

Little Noses
Awwww

This is what happens when I watch too much Football, most of it bad.

While the Raiders beat the Titans 17-10, the 49ers were dismal and the Sunday Night game (Cowboys vs. Bears) was a sleeper.

Think about this...

Week 1: 49ers beat the Rams 28-0
Week 2: Rams beat the Seahawks 9-3
Week 3: Seahawks beat the 49ers 37-18

Rock-Paper-Scissors, anyone?

About the only thing of note is that the winner was the home team each time.

Scratch a Dog

Scratch A Dog
(scratch scratch scratch)

Scratch A Dog

Scratch A Dog
Henry: (happy sigh)

Dog Blog Post #2275

I was totally stumped on what to take for the day's challenges Patience and Canine Myths.

So I stretched out on the sofa near my "studio" (aka Kitchen) and thought deep thoughts.

Soon Henry hopped up on the sofa and stretched out in my lap. Well, as much as a 90 lb dog can fit in a lap. And he wiggled and he squirmed and he wiggled and squirmed until he was practically under my chin.

And I pet him.

You really have no choice, as (1) he's really soft and, frankly, wonderful to pet, and (2) he'll nuzzle your hand with his cold nose until you start, and then repeat as necessary if you try to stop.

Which reminded me of something I read one day on a list of Superstitions:

"Scratch a dog and you'll find a permanent job." by Franklin P. Jones

I remember laughing as I read it, as I have no doubt that Mr. Jones was opining on how dogs expect you to keep scratching once you start and NOT that you can avoid ever being fired by giving a dog a scratch.

Of course, on the off chance that really is what he meant, I think I've got my bases covered.

Golden Boys

Finally, guys. I've been waiting for you.

Where were you?

Golden Boys
Henry: "He he he - we had a GREAT time!"

Golden Boys
Henry: "We were rolling around and playing Bitey-Face."

Golden Boys
Henry: "You should have been there."

Dog Blog Post #2274

I had the Nikon set up.

The boys had just been fed. The house was a pleasant temperature. I was wandering around the room pretending to set up the shoot.

The boys were prancing about excitedly.

Everything was ready to go.

And then Zachary went over to get a drink and Henry plopped down on the floor.

And that was it.

No fun.
No bitey-face.
No nothing.

So I took a seat on the sofa. Watched some baseball. Figured they would play sooner or later.

And I was right.

A couple hours (yes, HOURS) later they come charging into the room all happy smiles and panting.

Yup, they had played all right.

In the other room.

(sigh)

Soo... Looks like the boys where having a bit of Fun and Games at my expense.

Tuffs and Fluffs

Mr. Henry
Henry: "Momma, feeling itchy."

Coming, dear.

Tuffs and Fluffs
Henry: "Ahhhh"

Tuffs and Fluffs
Henry: "Much better."

Dog Blog Post #2270

Golden Retrievers are a double-coated breed, with a thick, soft, undercoat to keep them warm that is protected by a longer, coarser, outer coat.

When Spring comes, they blow their undercoat - sending giant tuffs of fluff wafting all over the house - and everyone and thing in it.

Henry repeats this in the fall - about now - although the tuffs are more mouse than moose sized.

He then continues to shed a small rabbit's worth of fluff per week, or so, over the rest of the year. No, I'm not kidding and no, I don't know how he manages to grow (and lose) so much.

This is in addition to whatever the groomer gets off him every 2-3 weeks.

(Zachary probably sheds as well, although the quantity is minuscule compared to his much fluffier nephew.)

The only tool I use for grooming is an undercoat rake - shown here - which is exactly what it sounds like. It has short, thick, widely-spaced, plastic-coated tines that reach down through the top coat to pull out loose undercoat.

LOTS of loose undercoat.

Henry loves being groomed, and will stand there, leaning into the rake, for as long as I'm willing to comb him.

Strong Lines
The (almost) Elegant Mr. Henry

Dog Blog Post #2269

I've made a half-dozen or so collars for the boys from plastic canvas and embroidery thread.

Each takes me anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to create, depending on how much free time I have and how complicated the pattern is.

This one is actually reversible. Not inside-out, of course, but from front to back. If you spin it around, the heart is filled in with creamy white thread.

Now that Football is back on again, I should really considering starting a new collar.
